{"id":2853,"date":"2006-07-13T12:21:26","date_gmt":"2006-07-13T09:21:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/?p=2853"},"modified":"2018-08-18T13:19:37","modified_gmt":"2018-08-18T10:19:37","slug":"what-we-saw-in-romania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/index.php\/2006\/07\/13\/what-we-saw-in-romania\/","title":{"rendered":"What We Saw in Romania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the early morning of July 12, 2006, after an uncomfortable night spent on a broken-down train from Sophia, Kay and I arrived in Bucharest, the capital of Romania.<\/p>\n<p>It was our first visit, and we didn\u2019t stay long since our destination was the Transylvanian city of <em>Bra<\/em><em>\u015fov<\/em>, a comfortable two-and-a-half-hour ride north in a modern train. In Bra\u015fov\u2019s train station, while I was in the ticket office arranging for our ongoing travel, Kay was approached by a man and uncharacteristically agreed for us to stay in an apartment that had belonged to the man\u2019s late parents.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>So, we became acquainted with Florian, who not only provided our lodging, but agreed to guide us to various interesting sights in the vicinity of Bra\u015fov. It might have been because of something we read; we certainly didn\u2019t know much about it. What we found was an attractive regional city with a long, troubled history. Over the centuries, Bra\u015fov had been invaded many times, first by the Tartars and later by the Turks. Our starter was followed by more pork, garnished with ham, cheese, mustard and spices. Our first stop was <em>Pele\u015f Castle<\/em>, the creation of <em>Carel I, King of Romania<\/em>. He was a German of the House of Hohenzollern, who through through his familial ties to Napoleon III and the Prussian monarchs was chosen to be ruling prince of Romania and, in 1881, the country\u2019s first king.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2860\" style=\"width: 481px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2860\" src=\"http:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Peles\u0327-Castle-2-790x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Peles\u0327-Castle-2-790x1024.jpg 790w, https:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Peles\u0327-Castle-2-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Peles\u0327-Castle-2-768x996.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Peles\u0327-Castle-2.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carel I<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>King Carel built Pele\u015f Castle in a mishmash of architectural styles at his own expense. He was a great collector, whose armament collection is said to have been the largest in Europe. He filled his castle with choice furnishings from various civilizations.<\/p>\n<p><em>Queen Maria<\/em>, wife of Carel\u2019s nephew Ferdinand, who inherited the throne after Carel\u2019s death, had her own palace near Pele\u015f. Where Carel\u2019s taste was eclectic, hers favored the Secessionist designs of fin-de-si\u00e8cle Vienna. The Art Nouveau glass and other objects were thrilling to look at.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2866\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2866\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2866\" src=\"http:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Sinaia-Monastery-4-1024x677.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Sinaia-Monastery-4-1024x677.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Sinaia-Monastery-4-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Sinaia-Monastery-4-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.goingplaces43.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Sinaia-Monastery-4.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sinaia Monastery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not far from Pele\u015f, we stopped to admire\u00a0Sinaia Monastery, built at the end of the 17th century by Prince Mihai Cantacuzino, who had been inspired by a trip to the Holy Lands. It is named after Mount Sinai where Moses allegedly received the Ten Commandments.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2869\" style=\"width: 454px\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sinaia Monastery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The churches and other monastery buildings are in an authentic Romanian style known as <em>Brancovenesc<\/em> that features class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kay and Florian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After lunch with Florian in the town of Bran, we visited its castle known as Dracula\u2019s, although it\u2019s unlikely that Vlad Tepes (the Impaler),\u00a0 Bram Stoker\u2019s inspiring model, ever stayed there.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2858\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2858\" style=\"width: 497px\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inside Ra\u015fov Castle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Ra\u015fov<\/em> is a medieval fortress that once protected the commercial road that linked Transylvania with provinces further south. It withstood its share of sieges over the centuries. Set high on a hilltop, it is a picturesque sight and very interesting to tour.<\/p>\n<p>On our third day, Florian accompanied us back to Bra\u015fov\u2019s train station where we caught a train for Bratislava, Slovakia. Saying goodbye, we thanked him profusely.
